This picture of comet Hale-Bopp was taken at 9.15 PM near the Fiholm castle, 20 km east of Eskilstuna, Sweden, on March 29, 1997. You can see some of the stars of Cassiopeia (upper right) and Perseus (upper left), the double star cluster in Perseus is in the upper middle. The picture was taken with an exposure time of 5 min, using a Pentax SP camera (50 mm lens, stopped down to f / 2.8), and Fujicolor G-800 film. The camera was mounted piggyback on a 4.5 inch Newtonian reflector, and tracking was done manually, with the aid of the telescope's slow-motion control and a cross-hair eypiece. My local photo dealer had the film developed and converted to digital form (Kodak Photo-CD), and I trimmed and color-adjusted the picture with a shareware program (GraphicConverter).
